These Templates / Guides are perfect for cutting out thermal pads the correct size and verifying the correct thickness for the CPU, GPU and RAM.

Simply flip it over and line up the thicker edges to a corner, verify the height looks snug and correct and then use a craft knife or something similar to cut along the edges. 

There is a template for double ram and a single ram that late N64 motherboards used.
